Art of Mirrors

Rotten Sun is the new performance collaboration between Mia Zabelka (e-violin, electronic devices, alien objects), Kira O’Reilly (live art), Kevin Craig (video art) and Lee Adams (experimental dj).

Inspired by the eponymous Bataille text, Rotten Sun present their initial explorations in movement, image and psychoacoustics – Art of Mirrors is an improvisation between four artists who have never before worked together. A gleaming razors edge, reflecting back the blank stare of the void.

Mia Zabelka

mia zabelka

Since her first release Somateme on Berlin’s Edition RZ, Austrian violinist and composer Mia Zabelka brings intensive and experimental approaches to the archetypically classical sound object of the violin, using both physical and digital extended techniques (prepared objects in the strings, howling, an array of live electronics) to hone her own instrumental language.
Her previous collaborators include Elliott Sharp, Dälek, Phill Niblock, Pauline Oliveros and Lydia Lunch.

She has given concerts and performances at many Festivals throughout Europe, America and Asia. Numerous CD, vinyl and video releases.

Kevin Craig

kevin craig

Kevin Craig is a practicing artist, designer, animator and Lecturer on the BA (Hons) Illustration with Animation programme.

Graduating from the School of Art in 2014, his practice includes design for record labels, live video performance, experimental film, graphic design, video and sound installation and gallery based film and installation.

Since 2005, he has collaborated with artists and musicians, creating video and illustration work for Bella Union Records, experimental US group BLK w/Bear and UK record labels Front and Follow and Little Crack’d Rabbit. Kevin continues to work as a freelance artist and designer using a wide range of media, from digital collage to photography.

Kevin has exhibited work in galleries and film festivals in the UK, the US and in Europe, showing experimental film and sound pieces.

As part of the audio/visual duo A.R.C. Soundtracks, Kevin undertook a three month residency at Manchester’s Islington Mill, resulting in a week long site specific exhibition, a short film and upcoming audio release.

Kevin’s Masters by Research (MRes) on The Sublime of Edmund Burke in Film and Installation included large scale projections, macro photography and 16mm film. This research project examined a range of cultural interpretations of the sublime, from 18th century aesthetics to contemporary film makers and artists, and explored the experience of the sublime through artistic practice.

Kevin has a broad interest in all forms of animation and moving image, particularly experimental film and installation.

Kira O’Reilly

Kira O'Reilly

Kira O’Reilly is a Helsinki based artist; her practice, both wilfully interdisciplinary and entirely undisciplined, stems from a visual art background; it employs performance, biotechnical practices and writing with which to consider speculative reconfigurations around The Body. But she is no longer sure if she even does that anymore.

Since graduating from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff in 1998 her work has been exhibited widely throughout the UK, Europe, Australia, China and Mexico. She has presented at conferences and symposia on both live art and science, art and technology interfaces. She has been a visiting lecturer in the UK and Australia and U.S.A in visual art, drama and dance. Most recent new works have seen her practice develop across several contexts from art, science and technology to performance, live art and movement work.

She has made movement works that she doesn’t like to call dances and has been increasingly informed by combat sports and martial arts as mode of investigating movement and embodied thinking, leading to running workshops that use grappling practices along side writing.
She writes, teaches, mentors and collaborates with humans of various types and technologies and non-humans of numerous divergences including mosses, spiders, the sun, pigs, cell cultures, horses, micro-organisms, bicycles, rivers, landscapes, tundras, rocks, trees, shoes, food, books, air, moon and ravens.
